The idea of confined space is often a nightmare for many, and the thought of working within them is most likely never to be considered, but there are job roles out there that heavily involve working within tight nooks and crannies which certainly aren’t for the faint-hearted. In our latest blog, we look at how the City and Guild confined space courses can help to manage the way you go about your job as well as keeping you safe at all times.
Depending on the type of confined space you find yourself working in, there can be many hazards which could lead to injuries or risk to life. Potential hazards could include noxious fumes & gases, reduced oxygen levels, risk of fire, explosions, flooding/drowning, dust, asphyxiation and more.
Construction work is often tiring and strenuous on the body, and if your role involves operating within confined space, this could be heightened even further. Heat can become trapped within tight, enclosed spaces which, if not dealt with correctly, could result in illness such as heat-stress, heat-stroke, exhaustion and possibly even collapse.
Confined spaces are well known to be difficult to manoeuvre in, but getting in and out is also often a challenge. Entrances may be tight, therefore plans should be in place in the event of an emergency in order to get individuals out safely. Equipment that is taken into the confined space such as breathing apparatus must also be considered when entering and exiting.
The educational institution City & Guilds, established in 1878, offers training in a wide range of fields. The City & Guilds courses cover confined space training in low risk, medium risk, and high risk environments, which is more pertinent to the topic at hand. Due to the high intensity of working within confined spaces, it is highly important that delegates are professionally trained and are knowledgeable and competent in the health and safety involved.
This low risk confined space training course focuses on, and trains delegates in how to operate safely within low risk confined space environments. Over the duration of the course, delegates will also be trained in the use of harness tripod, man-riding winch/fall arrest and safety lines, types of gaseous atmosphere, portable gas monitoring equipment as well as emergency preparedness and procedures.
The City and Guilds Medium Risk training course focuses on ensuring the safety of individuals within medium risk confined spaces. This course is essential for anyone working within confined spaces where access is difficult with risks present and breathing apparatus is involved. The course will also train delegates to select, use, inspect, and maintain equipment involved within confined spaces such as breathing apparatus, as well as how to enter, operate safely & effectively, and exit medium risk confined spaces.
The City & Guilds Confined Space High Risk (6160-03) Course trains individuals how to enter, operate safely and exit high risk confined space environments. Throughout the training, delegates will carry out tasks involving full breathing apparatus and equipment, following procedures, dealing with emergencies, appropriate behaviour, industry knowledge and standards for safe operation within and around confined spaces.
